TREVISO, WHAT TO SEE
FROM MESTRE TO TREVISO
The easiest way to get to the city of Treviso is by train from Venezia Mestre station and it will take 25 minutes.
It is also possible to reach the city by bus, you will have to go to the Mestre FS station, then take the RV train line from Venezia Mestre station to Treviso Centrale station. It will take about 40 min.
It is also reachable by taxi and car, you will reach the city in about 30 minutes.
PORTA SAN TOMASO
From Porta San Tomaso you can see the lion of San Marco located above the main entrance.
Continuing with your walk you can admire the Penisola del Paradiso a green oasis where until a few years ago it was populated by rabbits.
THE CHURCH AND CONVENT OF SAN FRANCESCO
You can then visit the Church and Convent of San Francesco, dating back to 1231, where you can admire frescoes of San Cristoforo, the four evangelists and a Madonna with the child, the tombs of the son of Dante Alighieri and the daughter of Francesco Petrarca.
Next you can see the fountain of the Three Faces, which explains a little about the origin of Treviso.
PIAZZA DEI SIGNORI
Next you will arrive at Piazza dei Signori, the heart of the city.
It is the cultural, historical and social center, here you can visit the Palazzo della Podestà (here stood the Town Hall, where the minor assembly that held the city’s government functions met) also called Palazzo della Prefettura, the Palazzo dei Trecento (built after the town hall was destroyed by fire, it is the ancient seat of the Maggior Consiglio) characterized by the Loggia dei Cavalieri.
CALMAGGIORE
It is the main street that connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza dei Signori and therefore the hub of the historic center of Treviso, a meeting and strolling destination for the entire community.
It connects the political dimension to the religious one through an atmospheric walk that allows you to admire the windows of elegant boutiques or typical shops in that union between past and present that characterizes the city of Treviso, with numerous buildings frescoed both on the facades and inside the porticoes.
THE CATHEDRAL
The Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle, better known as “the Duomo”, is the main place of worship in the city of Treviso and the seat of the diocese of the same name. Inside is the Bishop’s “Chair”.
Its majestic facade was built with a wide staircase that supports an imposing pronaos of six Ionic columns, which resemble ancient Greek and Roman temples in shape or style.
On the sides of the staircase we can admire two column-bearing lions, made of red Verona marble, which supported the old portal of the pre-existing Romanesque building.
